HONOLULU—Sophomore starter
Brianna Lopez fired a two-hit shutout, while
Haley Johnson provided the power in the University of Hawai'i softball team (9-6) win over St. Bonaventure, 2-0 in the final day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
For Lopez, it marked her first shutout of the season and the fourth of her career. She set a season-high with eight strikeouts in the win with no walks in her seven innings of work. Lopez retired the first 10 batters in a row and took a no-hitter through four complete innings. She and the solid UH defense did not allow a runner to reach second base.
In the bottom of the sixth, and the game knotted at 0-0,
Maya Nakamura drew a one-out walk. Johnson then followed by lifting a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall for her first round-tripper of the season. It was Johnson's fifth career homer for the sophomore designated player.
Lopez and St. Bonaventure starter Elizabeth Lis were locked in a pitching duel through the firth five innings. Lis gave up two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their month-long homestand with the Spring Fling Tournament which runs from Thursday, March 2 – Monday, March 6, 2023. The six-team tourney features Santa Clara, Pacific, Niagara, Utah, Hawai'i and St. Bonaventure who is staying for a second week in the Islands.
