Men’s Basketball Surges Past UC Irvine On Senior Night

HONOLULU  - Before its first sellout crowd in seven years, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team picked up a rousing 72-67 win over UC Irvine on Senior Night at the Simplifi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. WIth the win the Rainbow Warriors (21-9, 12-6) stayed alive in the Big West title race and sent seniors Samuta Avea, Kamaka Hepa, and Juan Munoz out on a winning note in their final home appearance.

UH knocked off the first-place Anteaters (20-10, 13-5) with a strong finish, using a 19-8 game-ending run to secure the win. The 'Bows remain in a tie for fourth-place, but are just one game out of first with two games left in a congested Big West standings.

JoVon McClanahan scored a career-high 27 points and added seven assists to lead the way. Freshman Mor Seck also came up big, earning his first start in place of an injured Bernardo da Silva. The 7-1 center responded with a career-high 14 points, 16 rebounds, and four blocks to energize the UH crowd. Harry Rouliadeff provided a spark of off the bench with 10 points, while Avea also chipped in 10.

DJ Davis scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Anteaters.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with three ties and nine lead changes. Neither team led by more than seven points as UCI eventually took a slight 35-33 edge at the break.

UCI looks to break away, taking a nine-point lead, 49-40, on a Dawson Baker three-pointer a little less than six minutes into the second half. By UH stayed within striking distance. It was a 59-53 game with eight minutes left when UH made its game-turning move. The 'Bows scored nine unanswered points, including an Avea three-pointer with six minutes left to give UH its first lead since the opening half.

UCI was able to tie the score 62-62, but would never lead again as UH took the lead for good on a pair of McClanahan free throws and held the Anteaters to just one field goal for nearly a four-minute span in the final stretch..

The 'Bows limited UCI to just 37 percent shooting after the break and clinched the game on the free throw line where they finished 19-of-24 for the game.

UH will now conclude the regular season on the road with a pair of games in Southern California, beginning with a matchup versus CSUN on Saturday, March 2. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT at the Matadome.
