BeachBows Split On Opening Day Of 2023 Season

HONOLULU – The 10th-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team opened the 2023 season by splitting a pair of matches on the first day of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Thursday at Queen's Beach. UH swept Saint Mary's 5-0 before losing a tight match to No. 9 Stanford, 3-2.

The teams played through blustery conditions with occasional showers hitting the beach. In the opening match of the tournament, UH swept Saint Mary's, 5-0. The 'Bows earned straight set wins on four of five courts to complete the sweep. A pair of Rainbow Wahine made successful debuts for UH. Freshman Caprice Lorenzo teamed up with Kaylee Glagau for a 21-10, 21-12 win at the No. 3 flight. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Sophie Buschmann paired up with Ilihia Huddleston for a 21-10, 21-15 win at the No. 5 court. Brooke Van Sickle and Jaime Santer made their debut together at the top of the order, rallying past Hawley Harrer and Daniella Kensinger 20-22, 21-10, 15-13 in the only pairing that went the distance.

In UH's second match of the day, the 'Bows fell to the Cardinal (2-0) in a match that went down to the wire. Buschmann and Hudddleston capped an impressive first day with their second sweep of the day to give UH its first point. When Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner pulled off a competitive two-set win of their own, the dual match was all tied at 2-2. It came down to court three for the deciding point, pitting UH's Glagau and Lorenzo versus Stanford's Emma Morris and Taylor Wilson. The third and deciding set was knotted 12-12, before Morris and Wilson reeled off the final three points to clinch the win for the Cardinal.

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic resumes on Friday morning, starting with a match between UH and Stephen F. Austin at 9:00 a.m. The Rainbow Warriors will wrap up round-robin action with a showdonw top-ranked UCLA at 12:45 p.m. The championship bracket will resume on Saturday.
