Women's Tennis' Vilcek Named Big West Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif.—Univeristy of Hawai'i women's tennis player Ana Vilcek earned her first Big West Player of the Week of her career after recording a going a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles and in the process upsetting a pair of ranked players.

On Tuesday, Vilcek also entered the ITA Rankings for the first time in her young career. Last week, on UH's three-match road swing through southern California, Vilcek led UH to a 2-1 record, sweeping UC Riverside in the Rainbow Wahine's Big West opener and then defeating San Diego State. UH fell to #18 San Diego, 5-2, but the match was closer than it shows on paper.

She opened the roadtrip by shutting out UCR's Kamya Nair, 6-0, 6-0. Vilcek followed with a hard-fought, three-set, super tie-breaker win over San Diego State's 116th-ranked Andjela Skrobonja, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (8). Vilcek capped the week with a three set win over another ranked opponent. USD's 37th-ranked Solymar Colling blanked Vilcek in the first set, but the sophomore fought her way back to win the second set convincingly and then was able to edge out Colling in a third set tie-breaker for the win, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

In No. 1 doubles, Vilcek and teammate Nikola Holmokova took down the Aztec pair of Rania Azziz  and Alicia Melosch 6-3. Hawai'i won the team competition 5-2.

The last Rainbow Wahine to be named Big West Player of the Week was Satsuki Takamura in the Covid-shortened 2020 season.
