Women's Tennis Team Enters ITA Rankings; Vilcek Ranked No. 80 in Singles

TEMPE, Ariz.—The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's tennis team made their debut into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings on Tuesday, coming in at No. 64 after a strong roadtrip this past week. Individually, sophomore Ana Vilcek also entered the singles rankings after upsetting a pair of ranked opponents last week.

Last year, the Rainbow Wahine appeared in the ITA team rankings at No. 73 on March 23, 2022, but fell out of the rankings two weeks after. Last week, the 'Bows opened their Big West campaign with a sweep at UC Riverside, then defeated San Diego State. Hawai'i ending their southern California swing falling at No. 18 San Diego, 2-5 in a match that was much closer than it looks on paper.

For Vilcek, this her first appearance in the ITA rankings in the sophomore's career. Last week, Vilcek was solid, winning all three singles matches on the No. 1 court. She opened the roadtrip by shutting out UCR's Kamya Nair, 6-0, 6-0. Vilcek followed with a hard-fought, three-set, super tie-breaker win over San Diego State's 116th-ranked Andjela Skrobonja, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0(8). Vilcek capped the week with another three set win over a ranked opponent. USD's 37th-ranked Solymar Colling blanked Vilcek in the first set, but the Rainbow Wahine fought her way beck to win the second set convincingly and then was able to edge out Colling in a third set tie-breaker for the win, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

The last time Hawai'i had singles players ranked in the ITA poll was on Feb. 5, 2020 when Bojana Markowic came in at #105 and Satsuki Takamura was ranked #109 in the first poll of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine will next head back to California for a tough string of matches, playing four in seven days, beginning with a conference match-up with UC Davis on March 10 at 11:30 a.m. HT.
