LEADING OFF
OFF ON THE WRIGHT FOOT
The Rainbow Warriors opened the season by taking three out of four games from Wright State at Les Murakami Stadium. After dropping the opener, UH took the final three games of the series, winning 5-4 in walk-off fashion in game two before picking up dominant wins in games three and four, winning 12-2 and 16-7. Hawai'i hit .306 in the series while totaling 36 runs as seven different starters hit at least .375 on the weekend.
PLAYING FOR HAWAI'I
For the second straight year, the Hawai'i roster will have a strong local flavor to it as 20 of the 40 players on the roster are local products. Head coach RICH HILL has made it a point of keeping the best local talent home, as UH has suited up 20 homegrown players in each of the last two seasons. The Rainbow Warriors haven't had that many local products on the roster since the 2000 season.
ROAD WARRIORS
Hawai'i enjoyed major success on the road in 2022 in year one under Rich Hill, going 14-9 in true road games and 15-10 in games played on the mainland. The Rainbow Warriors won each of their final four road series and won 12 of their final 16 away games, highlighted by a pair of conference sweeps of CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego.
PACKING A PUNCH
A year after turning in its best season offensively since joining The Big West, Hawai'i got off to a good start at the plate in its opening four-game series vs. Wright State. The Rainbow Warriors hit .306 over the weekend and scored 36 total runs, 28 of which came in the final two games of the series. UH also racked up 38 hits over the weekend, a number that ranks second in The Big West and 26th nationally after opening weekend, while ranking third in the conference in runs per game at 9.0.
» Seven starters hit .375 or better on the weekendm with four hitting at least .400.
» Six different players combined for 13 extra-base hits while 10 different players drove in a run.
» Scored multiple runs in eight innings with three or more runs in six of those and five-plus in two innings.
RALLY WITH TWO
The UH offense has done a lot of its damage with two outs in innings, scoring nearly half of its 38 runs with two away. The Rainbow Warriors have pushed across 42.1 percent of their runs (16 of 38) with two gone, scoring at least four two-out runs in each of the three wins. Additionally, Hawai'i is hitting .333 with two outs in an inning while eight different players have come through with a two-out RBI.
SUNDAY FUNDAY
In the last two seasons under head coach
Rich Hill and hitting coach Dave Nakama, the Hawai'i offense has put up some explosive performances in the final games of weekends. The 'Bows continued that trend Sunday in a 16-7 win, racking up 14 hits while scoring 13 runs over the first four innings. In 2022, the Rainbow Warriors averaged 9.9 runs per game and hit .321, helping the team go 12-2 in all series finales and 9-1 in the final game of Big West weekend sets. UH scored 10 or more runs in seven of its 14 series finales while seven regular starters hit at least .300 in those games.
TROPICAL SWARM
The depth of the Hawai'i pitching staff was on display over opening weekend, as the Rainbow Warriors used 15 different arms in the four games against Wright State. Of those 15, only three made more than one appearance while none of the UH pitchers worked more than 3.2 innings over the weekend. Eight of the UH pitchers did not give up a run during their outings while the 'Bows combined to hold Wright State to a .207 batting average.
» Tied for the second fewest hits allowed in The Big West at 24 and third in batting average against.
»
Trevor Ichimura and
Ben Zeigler-Namoa were the only two UH pitchers to work at least three innings and not allow a run.
»
Connor Harrison struck out five over 2.2 hitless innings in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
»
Tai Atkins earned the win in game one of the doubleheader, working a scoreless eighth inning.
» Newcomers
Harrison Bodendorf,
Sean Wiese and
Levi Kiuchi all did not allow a run.
