Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bench Play Sparks Men's Basketball To 20th Win Of The Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team picked up a Big West road sweep with a 61-50 win over CSU Bakersfield Monday night at the Icardo Center. With its third straight road win, the Rainbow Warriors (20-8, 11-5 Big West) stayed in heart of the conference title race while reaching the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.

Two days after holding off Long Beach State for a big road victory, UH finished strong at CSUB, turning a four-point halftime lead into a double-digit win over the Roadrunners (10-17, 6-10). UH completed a season sweep of a CSUB squad that entered Monday's action having won four of its last five contests.

Justus Jackson led four Rainbow Warriors in double-digits with a career-high 16 points and spearheaded a strong bench effort that also saw key contributions from Beon Riley (team-high six rebounds) and Mor Seck (three blocks). JoVon McClanahan finished with 15 points, while Samuta Avea and Kamaka Hepa each chipped in 12 points.

UH held the 'Runners to just 35 percent shooting and its lowest point total in the last nine games. The 'Bows bench out-scored the CSUB bench, 22-5, while UH proved efficient from behind the arc (8-of-20) and at the free thow line (13-of-18).

The first half was a defensive slugfest as the teams combined to hit just 6 of their first 24 shots. The pace picked up late with seven lead changes in the final five minutes. UH had the last word scoring the final five points, punctuated by a McClanahan half-court heave at the buzzer. The "Bows took a 28-24 lead at the break behind McClanahan's offense (12 points) and a stingy defense that held CSUB to just 33 percent shooting.

UH maintained that lead throughout the second half. CSUB pulled within one, 43-42, with 9:33 remaining. But UH responded with a 7-0 run, fueled entirely by reserves Riley (two free throws), Jackson (three-pointer) and Seck (alley-oop dunk). The 'Runners would get no closer after that as UH defeated CSUB for the fourth straight time.

UH now returns to the island to  play its final two home games of the season versus UC Riverside (Feb. 23) and UC Irvine. Tipoff for Thursday's UH-UCR matchup is 7:00 p.m. at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. UH's Senior Night Whiteout game vs. UC Irvine on Saturday will be at 5:00 p.m.
