Women's Tennis Fights Hard, but Falls Short at No. 18 San Diego

SAN DIEGO—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (3-5, 1-0 Big West) gave everything they had, but fell short at 18th-ranked San Diego, 5-2 on Saturday at the Hogan Tennis Center. In the loss, Hawai'i's Ana Vilcek upset 36th-ranked Solymar Colling in three sets. The loss wraps up a three-match road swing through Southern California.
 
The Toreros won the doubles point winning their matches at No. 1 and No. 3. USD's 16th-ranked duo of Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith shut out UH's Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova, 6-0 to open the match. Hawai'i's No. 3 pairing of Anna Kern and Satsuki Takamura were doubled up on by Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride, 6-3. Hawai'is No. 2 team of Klara Novakova and Rita Pinto defeated USD's Colling and Victoria Kalaitzis, 6-2.
 
In singles, the Rainbow Wahine fought hard to take four of the six matches to three sets. No. 4 Klara Novakova came back after dropping the first set to defeat Jordyn McBride, dominating in the third and final set, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. Hawai'i's No. 1 Vilcek battled her way back after getting blanked in the first set to outlast Colling with the match ending in a third set tie-breaker, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
 
The Rainbow Wahine will return home before embarking on their second roadtrip of the season where they will play four matches beginning with a Big West battle at UC Davis on March 10.
