RIVERSIDE, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-4, 1-0 BW) opened its Big West season with their first sweep of the season, 7-0 at UC Riverside on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the SRC Tennis Courts.

Due to inclement weather, the match stared with singles. Hawai'i swept all six matches for the first time this season. Hawai'i's No. 1 Ana Vilcek led things off by recording a shutout over UCR's Kamya Nair, 6-0, 6-0. On the No. 5 court, UH's Madison Kim then defeated Niki Shahbazi, 6-0, 6-2. Rita Pinto followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sydney Tran on the No. 6 court while No. 3 Satsuki Takamura clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory over Brionna Nguyen. With the match in hand, No. 4 Klara Novakova rallied from a set down and got stronger as the match wore on to knock off Sofia Lazzaroni in a third set super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (2). Playing at No. 2, Nikola Homolkova held off Maya Youssef, winning a close match also in a third set super tie-breaker, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7).

With the weather holding up, the two teams were able to get in the doubles point. UH's No. 3 duo of Kim and Takamura paired up to nearly blank UCR's Ngyuen and Shahbazi, 6-1. Hawai'i's No. 2 team of Novakova and Pinto picked up the doubles' point defeating Serina Saltzen and Nair, 6-2.

The Rainbow Wahine will remain and head south to San Diego to take on San Diego State next on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
