Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Career Night By Cotton Sparks UH To Acrisure Invitational Win

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- The University of Hawaii men's basketball team used a hot-shooting night from behind the arc to roll past UT Rio Grande Valley 76-57 in the Acrisure Invitational  Friday night at Acrisure Arena.  Matthue Cotton scored a game-high 23 points and drained five of UH's 11 three-pointers to help move the Rainbow Warriors to 4-0 on the season.

With the win, the Rainbow Warriors advanced to the title game of the tournament on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT, where they will face San Diego, a 71-57 winner over Arkansas State. The win also gives UH its best season start in eight years.

Cotton scored 19 points and went 5-of-6 three-pointers in the first half alone to help the 'Bows build a commanding 20-point lead at the break. The graduate transfer finished the game 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line for his breakout game as a Rainbow Warrior. The 23 points tied a career-high he set two years ago while playing at Yale.

Noel Coleman poured in 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 on three-pointers. Bernardo da Silva added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Justin McKoy finished with seven points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

UH conceded the first basket of the game but went on a 14-2 surge over the next four minutes to take control of the game. By the time the first half was over, UH hit 9-of-13 from deep. Conversely the Vaqueros went just 1-of-10 on three-pointers and shot just 27 percent overall in the first half.

The 'Bows continued to pour it on in the second half as their lead ballooned to as many as 26 points, 60-34, with 12:27 left in the game. UH cooled off from distance after the break, going just 2-of-11, but it was a moot point as the 'Bows cruised to victory to its fist mainland game of the year.

UH ultimately held UTRGV (2-4) to just 33 percent shooting for the game, while the 57 points was a season low for a UH opponent.
