PALM DESERT, Calif. — University of Hawai'i guard
Noel Coleman poured in a season-high 26 points and the Rainbow Warrior basketball team captured the Acrisure Invitational title with a 77-66 win over San Diego on Saturday night at Acrisure Arena.
Coleman finished 11-for-18 from the field to lead three UH players in double figures and the Rainbow Warriors improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
UH guard Jovon McClanahan scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half and went 4-for-6 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line while distributing four assists. Forward
Justin McKoy hit three of the Warriors' seven 3-pointers and also finished with 17 points.
UH shot 48% from the field as a team to San Diego's 38% and led by as many as 21 in the second half on its way to the tournament title.
McKoy scored 12 points in the first half and Coleman added 10 as UH led 35-25 at the break
The teams combined to go 1-of-10 early on and after eight lead changes in the first 8:40 of the game, McKoy hit his first 3-pointer to push UH ahead 12-10. UH didn't trail again and McKoy added another 3-pointer with 46 seconds left to give UH its largest lead of the first half. McKoy went into the break shooting 5-for-6 from the field overall, including 2-for-2 behind the arc.
McClanahan hit a 3-pointer off an assist from McKoy to give UH a 10-point lead at the 15:22 mark of the second half and Coleman later connected from long range to beat the shot clock and stretch the margin to 48-35. Coleman continued his surge by hitting his second 3-pointer then converted a steal into a layup and UH opened up a 52-35 cushion when center Mor Sek scored inside.
Coleman's layup with 6:15 left gave him a season high 23 points and McKoy hit his third 3-pointer to raise his total to 15 and gave UH its largest lead of the game at 65-44.
San Diego went on an 8-0 run to close to 54-67 with 2:22 left, but UH maintained a double-digit lead from the free-throw line.
San Diego guard Deuce Turner led the Toreros (5-2) with 18 points and guard Wayne McKinney III added 15.
The Rainbow Warriors will remain on the road for a game versus Utah in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Nov. 30. The game will be played at the Delta Center, home of the NBA's Utah Jazz, with tipoff set for 4:00 p.m. HT.
