Rainbow Warriors Return To Gridiron Hosting San Diego State

HONOLULU – Following its only bye week of the season, the University of Hawai'i football team will host longtime rival San Diego State Saturday, Oct. 14 in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The Rainbow Warriors (2-4, 0-1 MW) dropped their Mountain West opener to UNLV two weeks ago in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the Aztecs (2-4, 0-2) have lost their last four games and are in the midst of their longest losing streak since 2018.

GAME DAY PROMOTIONS
  • It's "Island Style Night" at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, and Les Murakami Stadium for Hawai'i's Finest presents "Kickoff at the Les."
  • Heineken is the game sponsor and will hand out 4,200 green rally towels at all public entrances and will be sampling Heineken 0.0 inside Gate 1B.
  • To set the tone for the night and create a true home-field advantage, 3,000 ti leaves will be handed out to fans, courtesy of Watanabe Floral. Ti leaves are believed to ward off evil and bring good luck.
  • The Letterwinners Club welcomes Blane Gaison. From 1976 to 1980 Gaison anchored the defense of the Rainbow Warriors from the safety position, earning All-American honors as a senior. He played five seasons in the NFL, all with the Atlanta Falcons.
  • Three teams from the Ultimate Sports Hawai'i Flag Football League will join us for the pregame tunnel run. The Hawaiian Warriors, Golden Hawks, and Built Different, ages spanning from 4U to 12U.
  • Dalis Kaleiopu and Asa Stevens of Golden Boy Promotions and two local rising stars in the boxing world, will be in attendance for the game and will be recognized on the field.
  • Hawaii's Finest presents, "Kickoff at the Les," will begin at 3 p.m. as gates open. Johnny Suite will be performing live for fans in attendance. A live DJ will keep fans entertained between sets, along with concessions, a Heineken Beer Garden, and multiple other activities in a carnival-like atmosphere. 
  • Students entering the facility will be directed to their new entrance located at the left field bullpen gate. They'll be scanned in for free with their QR code on the H Rewards app.
  • Parking will be open to the public one hour before gates open at 2 p.m.

GAME STORYLINES
  • This week's match-up is the 38th meeting between the teams with San Diego State holding a 24-11-2 advantage.
  • The Aztecs have won 9 of the last 11 in the series and 18-of-22. SDSU has won three straight after UH won back-to-back games in 2018 and '19.
  • SDSU has a 12-7-2 advantage in games played in Honolulu including a 17-10 victory in 2021. The Aztecs have won four of the last five games in Honolulu.
  • Four of the last five meetings have been decided by seven points or less.
  • The teams have met every year since 2012 as members of the Mountain West, which the Aztecs have won nine of the 11 match-ups. In those 11 meetings, UH has been limited to 14 points or less nine times.
  • Both teams are coming off bye weeks.
  • The teams met last season in San Diego also following a UH bye week and the Aztecs pulled out a come-from-behind 16-14 victory with a field goal with 0:07 remaining.
  • Hawai'i (2-4, 0-1 MW) dropped its Mountain West opener two weeks ago to UNLV in Las Vegas, 44-20. The Warriors trailed 20-3 at halftime.
  • Hawai'i has scored 20 points or less in each of its last three games, averaging 16.7 points per game during that span. In contrast, the Warriors averaged 27.7 points per game in their first three games of the season.
  • SDSU (2-4, 0-2) suffered its fourth consecutive loss two weeks ago following 49-10 setback to Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • During its four-game losing streak, the Aztecs have scored 10 points or fewer three times and are averaging 19.3 points per game on the year.
  • UH is 2-1 at home while SDSU is 0-2 on the road.
  • UH has been out-scored 130-50 in the first half this season, including 66-17 in the first quarter. The Warriors have trailed at the half in five of six games this season.
  • Hawai'i has dropped its last nine games on national television and 12 of its last 13 dating back to the start of the 2021 season. UH is 0-3 on national TV this season.
  • QB Brayden Schager has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of his last 15 games, which is currently the sixth-longest streak nationally. His seven fourth quarter TD passes this season is tied for the national lead with Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.
  • UH ranks No. 130 of 130 FBS teams in rushing offense, averaging 58.5 yards per game.  
  • The Aztecs rank 112th nationally in total offense (326.3) and No. 116 in total defense (439.7).
  • UH's Matthew Shipley and SDSU's Jack Browning are the only two players in the MW who double as their team's primary punter and placekicker.
