McBee’s Career Night Lifts UH To Win Over Cal State Fullerton

HONOLULU– The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team bounced back from their loss Thursday evening with a 66-53 victory over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-8, 3-1) stay atop the early-season conference standings at second overall by taking three of their first four contests against Big West opponents. The Titans (6-7, 1-3) meanwhile are on the reverse, dropping three of their first four games in conference action, and fell to UH for the fifth straight game.

Sophomore guard Meilani McBee set a new career-high with  22 points while hitting a career-high six three-pointers and swiping a career-high four steals. Facing her former squad, Lily Wahinekapu chipped in 14 points and buried all four of her three-point attempts. The Kaneohe native scored 11 points of her points in the first half.

UH drilled a dozen three-pointers on the night and racked up a season-high 22 assists, outpacing their previous best of 16 against Lipscomb and Grambling State. Wahinekapu (7),  sophomore guard Daejah Phillips (8) and Kelsie Imai combined for 20 of them.

Two nights after relinquishing an 18-point lead in a loss to UC San Diego, the Rainbow Wahine made sure to seal the deal on Saturday. UH built a 13-point lead at half and went on to win by double-digits against a depleted Titan squad. McBee played a big role in that with some timely three-point shooting. Fullerton closed to within five in the final minute of the third quarter, but UH hit a trio of three-pointers, including a pair by McBee to push UH's lead back to double-digits. The Titans would get no closer after that.  Powered by McBee, the UH bench out-scored the Titan bench 30-4, while UH also scored 21 points off of 18 Titan turnovers.

UH will now go on the road for a two-game set beginning on Saturday against rival Long Beach State, followed by a stop at CSUN on Monday. Tipoff for Saturday's game at LBSU is set for 1 p.m. HT.
