LONG BEACH, Calif.— The day started weirdly as Saturday's game between the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team and Long Beach State was delayed an hour due to leaks in the roof at Walter Pyramid, resulting in the game being moved to Gold Mine Gym. Following the changes, the Rainbow Wahine (5-9, 3-2) fell short of The Beach (9-7, 4-2) with a final of 62-48.
The win by LBSU snapped a four-game losing streak to UH, while the 'Bows have dropped two over their last three contests.
UH found themselves in an upward climb due to a slow start following a 13-2 run by The Beach to end the first quarter for a 17-7 lead. Graduate center
Kallin Spiller did her part in the opening frame scoring all seven points, while outside of Spiller, UH went 0-for-11 from the floor and 0-of-8 from three-point range.
The offense struggles continued in the second quarter as LBSU built on its lead, outscoring UH 18-13 for a 35-20 advantage going into the half.
UH leaned on the production of their other graduate player, guard
McKenna Haire, in the second half as she scored 12 of her career-high 15 points in the second half, including four made three-pointers. Despite the production from the Charlotte, North Carolina native, the advantage set in the first half was too much to overcome.
Spiller finished with a game-high 16 points, along with six rebounds. Adding to the production off the bench with Haire was sophomore center
Nnenna Orji, who turned in five points and seven rebounds.
The slow shooting start by UH improved throughout the 40 minutes of action but still stayed below the season averages, finishing at 35% from the floor, 18% from three, and 53% from the free throw line. UH outrebounded their counterparts with a 36-29 margin, including 13 offensive boards, but turned the ball over 22 times, resulting in 19 points off turnovers for LBSU.
UH will now turn its attention to Monday as they travel to CSUN. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. HT.
