Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rainbow Wahine Fall Victim To UC San Diego Rally

HONOLULU– The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped on Thursday night with a 60-57 defeat to UC San Diego inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-8, 2-1) have now lost three in a row to UC San Diego dating back to last season. The Tritons (5-8, 2-1) have won back-to-back Big West games after dropping their opener to Long Beach State.

UCSD rallied from an 18-point second-quarter deficit and a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the Rainbow Wahine in a game that came down to the final possession.

Sophomore guard Daejah Phillips paced the offense for the 'Bows with 19 points, while adding  four rebounds, and three assists. Jacque David added 14 points and nailed a trio of three-pointers, though her final two game-tying attempts in the waning moments of the game were amiss.

Following a back-and-forth first quarter where the Tritons held a slight advantage at 12-11, UH started the second quarter on a hot streak. The 'Bows rattled off 17 straight points to take a commanding lead of 28-12. UCSD answered with a run of their own to bring the game within 12 at the half, 32-20.

UCSD rode the momentum of a late second quarter run, and maximized it in the third quarter for a 17-6 run, capturing the lead at 39-38 with 1:51 on the clock. From there it was a back-and-forth affair the rest of the way.

UH held a 55-53 lead with less than three minutes left but Julia Macabuhay hit a three-pointer with 2:42 left to put the Tritons up. It was a lead UCSD would not relinquish, though the Rainbow Wahine had two opportunities late in the game to send the game in overtime.

David missed a three-pointer from the wing with three seconds left and UH would get another opportunity with 1.6 second left after UCSD missed a pair of ensuing free throws. David got another good look from long range, however her last gasp attempt fell off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

The Rainbow Wahine turned the ball over just seven times, but shot just 33 percent for the game and were out-rebounded 42-30. The Tritons shot a sizzling 52 percent in the second half to fuel their comeback win.

UH will now turn its attention to Saturday as they'll welcome in Cal State Fullerton for a 7 p.m. HT tipoff. The 'Bows currently hold a four game win streak over the Titans and have won six out of the last seven matchups.
