Women's Tennis Opens 2023 With High-Powered Weinman Foundation Invitational

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opens the new year hosting the high-powered Weinman Foundation Invitational. The three-day tournament runs from Thursday, Jan. 5 - Saturday, Jan. 7 at the UH Tennis Complex. Three of the teams coming to Honolulu to start the 2023 season earned a ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's first ranking of the season released on Wednesday--California (No. 12), Southern California (No. 14), Iowa State (No. 22) and Washington State, who finished last season ranked at No. 69.

  • Hawai'i opens the 2023 season with an 11-contest homestand spread across 37 days
  • The Rainbow Wahine look to improve upon last season's 12-8 overall record
  • Hawai'i finished third in The Big West standings in 2022 with a 7-2 conference record.
  • In the middle of the 2022 season, UH went on a seven-match win streak (its longest since winning seven-straight in 2019)
  • UH entered the ITA rankings at No. 73 in Week 11 (March 23). The 'Bows returned to the rankings for the first time since 2018
  • The Rainbow Wahine have six returnees, led by all-Big West second team doubles player, senior Satsuki Takamura and honorable mention singles awardee sophomore Ana Vilcek.
  • UH welcomes three new Rainbow Wahine - one freshman, Klara Novakova from Pizen, Czech Republic and two transfers - sophomore Nikola Homolkova (Long Beach State) and graduate student Rita Pinto (Virginia Tech).
  • This past Fall, Hawai'i was led by Vilcek who posted a team-best 5-2 singles record. She was the lone Rainbow Wahine to advance to the Round of 32 in the ITA Southwest Regionals and she and doubles partner defeated Stanford's Alexis Blokhina/Ana Geller by a break in November, 6-4.
  • Newcomer, LBSU transfer Homolkova finished the fall with a 4-2 record, while returnees Madison Kim and Satsuki Takamura both notched three wins apiece
