Brett Sheward were honored by the Big West with weekly awards following the Rainbow Warriors' season-opening series sweep of Ball State.
Chakas, a junior from Nea Smyrni, Greece, was named Player of the Week while Sheward, a junior from Newport Beach, Calif., earned Defensive Player of the Week. For both, the awards were the first of their career.
Chakas led the team in kills in both matches against the Cardinals with 19 in the opener and 22 in the rematch. He averaged 5.13 kills per set for the series and hit .485.
Sheward averaged 3.00 digs per set in the series with a career-high 17 in Friday's win. In addition, he did not commit a reception error in 47 attempts.
The Rainbow Warriors will host Saint Francis this week in a two-match series, Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Friday, Jan. 20.
