Hawai‘i Sailing Blows Past Field To Capture Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii sailing team dominated the.competition in capturing the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invitational, held Jan. 14-15, at Keehi Lagoon. It marked the seventh straight time the Rainbow sailors captured their home regatta.

A total of 18 teams representing a dozen schools from across the country competed in the two-day event. Saturday saw light conditions and a delayed start while Sunday saw the breeze pick up as the regatta concluded with 16 total races completed.

UH fielded four teams with all of them finishing in the top six of the standings. UH's top squad of skippers Owen Lahr and Bastien Rasse and crew Frances Tarpey-Schwed and Kelsie Grant blew past the field with a regatta low of 43 points, 28 points ahead of its nearest competition. Competing in the B division, Rasse and Grant were particularly impressive, finishing in the top two in six of eight races.

The Rainbow Green squad featuring Trey Summers, Chloe Long, Erik Anderson, and Everett McAvoy were the regatta runner-ups with a total of 71 points. Meanwhile, UH's two women's squads also fared well. The top Rainbow Wahine squad of Vivian Bonsager, Sophia Shaeffer ,Mercy Tangredi and Taylor Ledgerwood. placed fifth, while the Rainbow Wahine White of Morgan Carew, Quinn Gladstone-Lamas, Katherine Shofran and Lily Simpson placed sixth.

Next up for the coed team is the PCCSC Top Nine Open, Feb. 18-19, in Redwood City, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine will compete in its next collegiate event at the Jeff Simon Women's Regatta in San Diego, Jan. 28-29.
