HONOLULU — The Hawai'i women's soccer team closes out its road trip to the Pacific Northwest by taking on Portland State on Thursday at 10 a.m. HT in the final nonconference match before opening Big West play. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

ON THE PITCH
- The 'Bows are coming off of a tough 1-0 loss against unbeaten Portland on Sunday in a match in which the Rainbow Wahine held the pilots scoreless until the 86th minute.
- Goalkeeper Lauren Marquez led UH's defensive effort against Portland, finishing with a season-high four saves and making a number of standout plays in goal. Hawai'i limited the Pilots to just five shots in the first half before fighting off a barrage of 19 shot attempts in the second half and giving up just the one goal.
- The Hawai'i offensive attack has gotten off to a much faster start through four matches than a season ago. The 'Bows have scored four goals through four matches after having none at this point in the season in 2021 while the 43 shot attempts this year far out-paces the 17 last year through four contests.
- Depth has been on display throughout the first three matches, as the 'Bows are tied for the conference lead with seven different players with a point. Additionally, 24 players have seen action while UH has used a different starting lineup in all three matches, with 16 different players starting at least one match.
- Each of UH's two wins came on a 2-0 home-opening weekend at the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff, picking up a 2-1 win over Seattle on Aug. 25 before shutting out Nicholls State, 1-0, on Aug. 28.
- The Rainbow Wahine dominated possession in those two matches, owning a 34-11 advantage in shot attempts with 14 shots on goal compared to just six by Seattle and Nicholls State. Hawai'i also held an 18-5 advantage on corner kicks.
- The 'Bows have already matched their win total from a season ago and their four goals are the most by a Hawai'i team through three matches since 2017.
IT'S GOOD TO HAVE OPTIONS
Through four matches, the 'Bows have displayed tremendous depth as a number of players have contributed in all facets of the game. Hawai'i has seven players with a point, as three have scored a goal and four more have dished out at least one assist. Defensively, seven different players have earned a start on the back line while Lauren Marquez and Sophie Augustin have split time in goal, with Marquez playing 225 minutes and Augustin playing 135 minutes. Additionally, Hawai'i has used a different starting lineup in all four games while 24 players have seen action, with 16 earning a start.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Hawai'i has gotten big-time production from several underclassmen to compliment its group of veterans. Four different freshmen, including three true freshmen, have started a game while a trio of sophomores have earned starting nods.
- Sophomore Krista Peterson leads the team and is one of 13 players in The Big West with two goals.
- Sophomore Mia Foster has started all four matches and has an assist while leading the team with nine shots. Fellow sophomore Jacey Jicha has three starts on the back line.
- Redshirt freshman Amber Gilbert has started all four matches at forward and is one of four freshmen in the conference with a goal, scoring the first of her career in the win over Seattle on Aug. 25.
- True freshman Zoe Park has three starts on the back line, while fellow true freshmen Eve Bleam and Penny Noland each have two.
VETERANS LEAD THE WAY
The Rainbow Wahine will rely on a veteran core to lead the way in 2022. Three-year starters and 2021 All-Big West selections
Eliza Ammendolia and
Kelci Sumida have helped pace the Hawai'i offensive attack while several others with experience have contributed on the back line.
- Sumida leads the team with two assists and is one of nine players in the conference with multiple assists. She is also tied for second on the team with eight shots.
- Ammendolia scored her first goal of the year in the win over Seattle and leads the team with five shots on goal, and has eight total shot attempts.
- Upperclassmen goalies Lauren Marquez and Sophie Augustin have split time in goal, with Marquez playing 225 minutes and Augustin 135, with the two combining for 14 saves.
TURNING UP THE PRESSURE
The Rainbow Wahine have shown improvement from a season ago on the offensive end through the first four matches. Hawai'i has scored four goals through four matches while attempting 43 shots, including 20 on goal. In 2021, the 'Bows did not score a goal until the fifth match of the season and did not score their fourth goal until the sixth match of the year.
