HONOLULU – The Hawai'i football team picked up its first win of the season and gave head coach
Timmy Chang his first career victory, beating Duquesne 24-14 on Saturday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-3) made a couple of big plays on special teams in the first half to build a lead, before forcing three turnovers at key moments in the second half to seal the win. UH earned the victory despite finishing with just 184 yards of total offense, while running 46 offensive plays and losing the time of possession battle 37:02-22:58.
After Duquesne got on the board first with a field goal on its opening drive, Hawai'i responded with a touchdown drive to jump in front.
Jalen Perdue gave the 'Bows great field position with a 58-yard kickoff return to set UH up at the Dukes' 35-yard line. Six plays later,
Dedrick Parson found the end zone from five yards out to make it 7-3, UH, with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
The Warriors capitalized on another big special teams play to add to their lead in the second quarter.
Kaulana Makaula came bursting through to block a Duquesne punt that Hugh Nelson recovered and returned to the Dukes' 14-yard line. After two plays and a pair of Hawai'i penalties, Parson scampered in from 17 yards out for his second TD of the night.
The Dukes (1-3) added another field goal at the end of the first half, driving 68 yards in 11 plays following a Hawai'i blocked field goal to make it 14-6 at the break.
Duquesne dominated time of possession in the third quarter but the two teams went scoreless in the frame.
Malik Hausman came away with his second interception of the season in the end zone to keep the Dukes off the board following a long drive to start the second half. However, on the very next play
Joey Yellen was intercepted by Ayden Garnes to set up a Duquesne drive that ended with a missed field goal.
Two plays into the fourth quarter,
Penei Pavihi stretched the UH lead with a 50-yard interception return for a TD to make it 21-6.
Matthew Shipley tacked on a field goal later in the fourth to cap off a drive that ate up 6:38 of the final quarter.
The Dukes added a late touchdown and recovered an onside kick, but Hausman picked off his second pass of the night with 1:40 left to seal the game.
Hausman became the first UH player to intercept at least two passes in a game since
Khoury Bethley on Oct. 2, 2021. He is also the first Rainbow Warrior player to have multiple interceptions and at least three pass breakups since Nov. 24, 2012, when John Hardy-Tuliau did it against UNLV.
Parson turned in his fourth career multi-TD game, giving him four of the Rainbow Warriors' seven total touchdowns this season. Makaula's blocked punt was Hawai'i's first since Sept. 28, 2019 at Nevada, when
Andrew Choi came up with one. Additionally, Pavihi's pick-six was the first of his career and first by a UH player since Nov. 20, 2021 when
Cameron Lockridge did it against Colorado State.
The Rainbow Warriors will head back out on the road next week for a nonconference game at New Mexico State on Saturday at 2 p.m. HT.
