ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Hawai'i football team played its first road game of the season, falling at No. 4 Michigan 56-10 Saturday night at Michigan Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 0-3 on the young season, its first such start since the 2013 season.
After a one-hour weather delay, the teams took the field and Michigan stormed out of the gates. The Wolverines scored on their first three drives, including a touchdown on just its second play from scrimmage when J.J. McCarthy found Hawaii native Roman Wilson for a 42-yard scoring strike.
In all, Michigan scored on five of its first six drives and built a dominating 42-0 lead at the half. Michigan out-gained UH 410-47 with 240 yards in the air and 170 on the ground.
McCarthy was an impressive 11-of-12 for 229 yards and three touchdowns in the first two quarters. Meanwhile, the Wolverine defense held UH to just two first downs in the first half and just 14 yards rushing.
Despite the halftime deficit, the Rainbow Warriors showed grit in the second half. The Warriors shutout the Wolverines in the third quarter and out-gained them 206-178 in the final two quarters. UH put 10 points on the board after the break, highlighted by a dynamic 54-yard scoring run by freshman
Tylan Hines for his first career touchdown.
UH also won the turnover battle for the game. After committing eight turnovers in its first two contests, UH enjoyed its first turnover-free game since the 2020 New Mexico Bowl, while also getting an interception from Virdel Edwards. UH also committed just one penalty all game.
The Rainbow Warriors head back to the island for a Homecoming matchup against Duquesne on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is 6:00 p.m. at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
