Rainbow Sailors Finish 11th In Coed National Semifinals

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team put together a strong push to make the final cut at the 2022 ICSA Coed National Championship but fell just short with an 11th place finish in the Eastern Semifinals.

A total of 36 teams - split into two 18-team semifinal brackets - looked to fill out the 18-team finals to be held this weekend. Needing to finish in the top nine of their semifinal pool, UH entered the day with a lot of work to do. The 'Bows were in 17th place after day one and were 45 points away from the top-nine cutoff.

UH, however, gave an inspired effort and nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain. UH got within as close as 10 points off the pace, in large part due to the performance of A division sailors Bastien Rasse and Devon Stapleton. The duo finished in the top-five in three of their four races on the day, including a first-place finish.

Samuel Patton and Sam Kimmel were solid in the B division finishing as high as second and third in a pair of races. In the end, however, it wasn't enough as UH totaled 248 points and finished 22 points behind ninth-place Boston University. PCCSC champions and conference rival Stanford won the regatta semifinal with 105 points and advanced to this weekend's finals.

While the coed team concluded the season, UH is not done yet at nationals as the Rainbow Wahine will begin competition on Monday, May 23 in the women's national semifinals.
