Rainbow Sailors Head To The Big Easy For The ICSA Nationals

The University of Hawai'i sailing team is back in the postseason as they head to the ICSA National Championships hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans. Both the coed and women's teams will compete in the nationals which start May 19 on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain.

The ICSA Nationals consists of three events -- coed fleet racing, women's fleet racing, and team racing. UH will compete in two of the events -- the coed championship and the women's championship.

The Rainbow coed team received an at-large bid to the nationals after a stellar spring season in which they captured four regattas while finishing no lower than third in nine events. UH has been placed in the Eastern Semifinals with 18 other squads and will compete on May 19-20. The top nine squads from each semifinal will then advance to the final field of 18 with a champion crowned on May 22. Competing for the coed team will be all-conference sailors Samuel Patton, Sam Kimmel, Devon Stapleton, and Bastien Rasse, as well as Owen Lahr and Frances Tarpey-Schwed

This will be the program's 19th appearance in the coed fleet racing championship and first since 2019. UH looks to advance to the final 18 for the first time since the field was expanded to 36 teams nearly 15 years ago. The 'Bows had previously enjoyed a spectacular run from 2002-05 when they finished in the Top 3 four straight years, including a national title in 2004.

Meanwhile the Rainbow Wahine sailing team earned an automatic bid into the nationals with a second place finish during the PCCSC Women's Spring Championships in April. Competition for the women's regatta begins on May 23 and like the coed championship will consist of a two-day semifinal round before the finals on May 25-26. The Rainbow Wahine will be represented by all-conference sailors Vivian Bonsager and Mercy Tangredi, as well as Kelsie Grant, Sophia Schaeffer, Morgan Carew and Anna Kalabukhova.

This is UH's 19th appearance in the women's nationals and first since 2018. UH has been a regular at the nationals. In 25 years of existence the Rainbow Wahine sailors have missed nationals just five times, excluding the cancellation of the 2020 event due to COVID. The Rainbow Wahine, who captured the 2001 national title, looks to advance to the finals for the first time since 2012.
