DAVIS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (23-17, 17-8 BigWest) held off UC Davis (21-29, 8-14 BWC) on the road, 6-4 at La Rue Field on Friday afternoon. Rookie pitcher
Brianna Lopez improved to 14-7 overall with a complete game win and got lots of offensive support as UH racked up double-digit hits for the second time in the last three games.
Lopez allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in her 18th complete game of the season. It was the 10th time this year that she has fanned at least five batters in a game.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the scoreboard first.
Brittnee Rossi drew a leadoff walk but was erased at second on a fielder's choice hit into by
Nawai Kaupe who was safe at first. Kaupe moved to second on a
Ka'ena Keliinoi groundout and
Maya Nakamura drove an RBI-double to the right-centerfield gap to drive in Kaupe for the early 1-0 lead.
The Aggies tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. UC Davis loaded the bases on a single, double and a walk. Sarah Nakahara then lifted an RBI foul fly out to left that scored Reese Mattley from third.
Rossi led off the third by yanking a triple down the rightfield line. Kaupe followed by blasting her league-leading 13th home run of the year over the leftfield fence. Between two quick outs, UH's Nakamura drew a walk.
Dallas Millwood continued the inning by picking up her second single to put two runs on base.
Mikaela Gandia-Mak then ripped a double to the left-centerfield gap to drive in both runners to extend the lead to 5-1.
In the fourth, Keliinoi drove a double to centerfield to start the inning. But she was left stranded there as UCD retired the next three batters in a row.
Hawai'i added an insurance run in the sixth. UH loaded the bases on a couple of singles and an error. With two outs and the bases juiced, Keliinoi hustled down the line to beat the throw on an infield single to second which scored pinch runner Chloe Agueda to extend UH's lead to 6-1.
The Aggies rallied for three runs in the sixth off an RBI-single by Mattley and a two-run home run by Libbie McMahan.
UC Davis' Sarah Reineman took the loss, dropping her record to 3-2. She allowed three runs on four hits with a walk. Mia Hildebrand threw the final five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk.
