BeachBows Split On Opening Day of Big West Tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i beach volleyball split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Big West Tournament Friday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on the campus of Cal Poly. The Rainbow Wahine defeated UC Davis, 4-1, before falling to host Cal Poly, 3-2, in the last match of the day.

UH will return to the sand on Saturday morning when they face the winner of Long Beach State-UC Davis in an elimination match. First serve is at 7:15 am HT and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

UH received a first-round bye as the top seed and faced No. 4 UC Davis, who defeated No. 5 CSU Bakersfield earlier in the day. A month ago the Aggies upset the 'Bows, 3-2, in the Big West Challenge in Long Beach. UH avenged that loss, though it wasn't easy. UH made quick work of courts No. 5 and 2 to jump out to a 2-0 lead. But the final three courts were a battle with all of them extended to a third and deciding set. Nursing a 2-1 lead, the top pair of Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau ultimately clinched the match by rallying from a set down to defeat Chelsea Maeglin and Colleen McGuire 19-21, 21-13, 15-10 to help UH move on.

That win set up a clash with No. 3 seed and tournament host Cal Poly. It was a match that went down to the wire as the final three points were decided in three-set fashion. With the dual match knotted,2-2, it came down to the No. 2 court. The Mustangs pair of Jayelin Lombard and Piper Ferch ultimately rallied for 13-21, 21-14, 15-13 win over Kylin Loker and Jaime Santer to clinch the match and secure a spot for Cal Poly in Saturday's final.

The Mustangs have now beaten UH in five of their last six meetings in the Big West Tournament. The 'Bows can still claim the tourney title and must win three straight matches on Saturday to do so.
