FIRST PITCH
  • The Rainbow Warriors are on fire as the team has eight of their last ten, including two consecutive conference sweeps against UC Riverside and UC Bakersfield.
  • The 'Bows set a new season-high 35 hits in against Bakersfield.
  • Sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao has tied  the longest hit streak of the season at 10. In that span he is hitting .409, with 18 hits, three doubles, and a grand slam.
  • Blaze Koali'i Pontes started his first game last Thursday where he went 6.0 innings, tying the team-high eight strikeouts on the season, and only allowing one run.
  • The UH bullpen is far from clear as it has seen 8 different guys start games and 11 guys able to give innings out of the pen.
  • Since returning to the lineup fulltime Kyson Donahue is batting a team best .370 with four doubles, two home runs, and six RBIs.
  • UH pinch hitters continue to struggle as they are now 4-28 on the season, while opponents are 5-43.
  • Cade Halemanu picked up his first win last friday night where he delivered 6.0 innings, gave up one run and struck out six.
  • Hawai'i split with Fresno State 1-1 on the season.
  • UH had one more mid-week game scheduled against Cal Baptist on Mon. May 23.

LEAN ON ME
The bullpen has been a stable part of the 'Bows approach. Going into the UC Bakersfield series, the pen had an ERA of 5.43. After the three-game series and a mid-week game, it's now 4.87. After the series sweep, three pitchers have stood out as "stoppers" in the the season. Dalton Renne has filed 28.2 innings of action for a 3.45 ERA while sporting a 1.08 WHIP. Cory Ronan holds a 3.14 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. Blaze Koali'i Pontes showed out with a six inning. one run start. Pontes tied the team high eight strikeouts and sits with a 3.78 ERA and 2-0 record.

SLIM SHADY? NAH, HAWAI'I ELECTRIC COMPANY
You may notice many of the everyday players have dyed their hair blonde; well, there's a reason behind it. When someone reaches bases with an extra-base hit or records a significant strikeout, don't be surprised if you see the hat or helmet come off—followed by a rubbing of the head towards the dugout, signaling the creation of electricity. The team calls themselves the "Honolulu Electric Company," as they're a higher energy crew.

MASTER'S OF MONDAYS
Ever heard the phrase "A case of the Mondays"? Most people don't like the day because it's the start of the workweek after the weekend, but the Rainbow Warriors seem to be big fans of the day. The 'Bows are 3-0 on Mondays while holding a 13-17 record any other day of the week heading into the series with UC Davis. On the opposite spectrum, UH is 3-8 on Saturday games. With 20 games remaining on the schedule, UH has one more remaining game on Monday. It's set for May 23rd at California Baptist.

HITS = WINS, MATH IS EASY
From Opening Day on February 18th to April's Fools Day on April 1st, the 'Bows struggled at the plate resulting in an 8-15 record. In those 23 games, UH only tallied 10 or more hits in five of those contests. Since then, on April 2nd, the offense has been on a rampage, stacking up eight games with double-digit hits over their last 10, resulting in an 8-2 record.

WELCOME TO THE ROTATION
Throughout 33 games, UH has had nine different starters. Only junior Cade Halemanu has been solidified as a true starter, as all nine of his appearances this season have been as a starter. Graduate Andy Archer was in the same category till recently, when he spent time in the bullpen. Emerging though as a potential starter in game one or two of a series has been Blaze Koali'i Pontes. Previously Pontes made 13 appearances out of the bullpen. Still, in the series against CSU Bakersfield and game one, he made started and picked up his second win of the season after throwing six innings of one-run baseball.

SOLUTION, DON'T DO IT
Production at the plate can lead to stellar performances on the field and vice versa. All season sophomore Dallas Duarte has subscribed to the theory has he's third on the team in batting average (.293), on-base plus slugging (.786), runs batted in (21), and total bases (47). On the field, the catcher has thrown out 10-of-14 would-be base stealers while accumulating a .986 fielding percentage. In short, don't pitch to Duarte and don't run on Duarte.

A COUPLE OF LONG AND HISTORIC NIGHTS
Head coach Rich Hill is very familiar with playing long games; in his first game as the head coach of Hawai'i on February 18th against Washington State, the 'Bows played a 9-inning game in four hours and 27 minutes. Not to be outdone, on February 28th, Hill and the 'Bows played a 15-inning, six-hour, and 14 minute game against San Diego State. In two of the first eight games at UH, Hill coached the longest 9-inning game and the longest game time-wise in program history. He has accumulated six four-hour long games so far. He added another to his resume this past weekend where 13 innings with UC Santa Barbara clocked in at 5:20.
