BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team claimed their second straight series win 4-1 over CSU Bakersfield Friday night at Hardt Field.
The Rainbow Warriors (15-16, 8-6) have a chance at their second straight conference sweep, while the Roadrunners (14-18, 7-4) look to avoid being swept for the first time this year.
The 'Bows jumped out to an early lead when junior catcher
Dallas Duarte stepped up to the plate with one runner on base, and in a 1-0 count, Duarte turned on an inside pitch and sent a rocket out to left field, that cleared the wall for an early two-run lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Roadrunners loaded the bases before having their first and only run walked in. UH went on to turn an inning-ending double play to minimize the damage and keep a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, sophomore second baseman
Stone Miyao cranked a double off the right-field wall to jumpstart the offense after having 12 straight batters retired. Freshman shortstop
Jordan Donahue hit into a fielder's choice before stealing second, setting up graduate center fielder
Cole Cabrera. Cabrera knocked one into left field to drive in the third run of the ballgame.
Duarte led off the eighth inning with a single to center field, followed by junior first baseman
Jacob Igawa reaching base too. Junior
Matt Wong drove in the game's fourth run on a double in the left-center field gap.
Bakersfield managed a leadoff hit in the ninth inning, but Hawai'i shut the door to take a 4-1 win.
Junior
Cade Halemanu (1-3) earned his first win of the season in six innings of work. He allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out six on 106 pitches. Junior
Dalton Renne snagged his second save of the year when he took over in the ninth.
Cabrera led the way with a game-high four hits and one RBI. Duarte's two-run bomb earned him the most RBIs with two.
The Rainbow Warriors finish the weekend series tomorrow with Bakersfield, with the first pitch set for 10:05 am HT.
