Five Rainbow Warrior Basketball Players Named Academic All-Big West

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Big West announced its all-academic honorees for its winter sports with five University of Hawaii men's basketball players making the list. Mate Colina, Bernardo da Silva, JoVon McClanahan, Zoar Nedd and Beon Riley each earned all-academic recognition.

The five honorees in one season is the program's most ever, spanning three decades of the award in both the WAC and Big West. Meanwhile, senior Mate Colina, who graduates this fall with a degree in human development and family studies, earned his fourth straight all-academic award. Only one other player in program history -- Bobby Nash -- has achieved that feat.

Da Silva (marketing major), McClanahan (entrepreneurship), Nedd (communication) and Riley (business) are all first-time honorees.

To be eligible for the all-academic team, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
