Baseball Makes it Six Straight With 7-4 Win at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team continues to get it done with a 7-4 win over CSU Bakersfield Thursday night at Hardt Field.

The Rainbow Warriors (14-16, 7-6) improve their win streak to six while picking up their first Thursday win against the Roadrunners (14-17, 7-3).

Both teams were locked into a pitching and defensive duel during the first five innings of the ballgame. Junior Blaze Koali'i Pontes got the nod where he went 6.0 innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out eight.

In the sixth, run support came for him as sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori led off with a single to get things started. Junior catcher Dallas Duarte was hit-by-pitch, and graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera was walked to load the bases for junior first baseman Jacob Igawa. Igawa, with two outs, barreled a ball and cleared the bases with a ball to the gap. Junior right fielder Matt Wong followed with an RBI single to blow the game open 4-0 in the sixth.

The Roadrunners got one back in the bottom of the sixth after UH turned a double play before the next batter hit a solo shot over the right center field wall.

With nothing going for the Rainbow Warriors in the seventh CSUB, put the pressure on as they would get runners on second and third with one out. A single from Casillas drove in both runs cutting the lead down to 4-3.

The 'Bows answered back in the eighth as Cabrera was hit-by-pitch and sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao walked. Wong at the plate smacked a double that scored one. Hawai'i loaded the bases again where Ujimori got hit-by-pitch, forcing in another run, making it 6-3.

For the third time, UH got the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, where freshman shortstop Jordan Donahue walked in the final run for the Rainbow Warriors.

Bakersfield managed to get one run in the ninth before Miyao caught a line drive and doubled up the runner at first base to end the game.

Ujimori and Wong led the team with two hits each, while Igawa's three RBIs were tied for a game-high.

Junior pitcher Cameron Hagan got it done in his 2.1 innings of relief to finish the game and snag his first save of the season. He gave up two hits, one run, and struck out a pair.

The Rainbow Warriors are back again tomorrow with Cade Halemanu set to take the mound for game two, with the first pitch set for 3:05 pm HT.
