FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ.—On the second day of the NCAA Zone E diving championship, the University of Hawai'i diving team had two divers make their way into the championship round, competing for a spot in the NCAA Championships.
Senior
Timothy Newton finished the highest on the day for UH as he placed ninth overall in the men's platform event with a final score of 569.30. Over his six attempts, Newton ranked in the top-10 on two dives. He placed as high as third with a forward 2 ½ somersault one twist pike, scoring a 56.55. His other top-10 finish came on his first attempt of the finals with an inward 2 ½ somersault tuck, registering a 52.65 for a ninth-place finish.
For the Rainbow Wahine junior
Daphne Wils finished 11th overall in the three-meter event, after placing 12th overall a day before in the one-meter. Wils ranked between fifth and tenth in five of her six dives, but her finish at 16th in her third attempt kept her out of the top 10 or higher. As a result, Wils didn't qualify for the NCAA Championship in either of the two events.
The third and final day of the championships will be the last opportunity for UH to have a representative in the NCAA Championships. Senior
Max Burman, sophomore
Mason Williams, and Newton will go in the men's one-meter, while sophomore
Elma Lund will have shot in the women's platform.
