HONOLULU — University of Hawai'i women's swimmer Holly Nelson was named Big West Athlete of the Week following a pair of outstanding performances against Grand Canyon. The honor marks Nelson's first career weekly award.
Nelson led the Rainbow Wahine tallying eight podium finishes, including six wins and a team-high 34 points across the two dual meets. She helped UH to a 140-84 win on Friday, leading the team with 12 points before posting a meet-high 22 points on Saturday.
In Friday's home opener, Nelson earned three victories and one bronze. Nelson contributed to notch victories in the 200 medley relay (1:39.26) and 400 free relay (3:21.44), while also taking first in the 100 free, touching the wall at 49.62. She added a third-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 23.01.
Nelson raised the bar even higher in Saturday's rematch against the Lopes, with three more wins and one runner-up finish. Nelson helped set two Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex records, winning the 50 free (22.62)—breaking the record set just the day before—and anchoring UH's 200 free relay (1:30.92) with a 21.94 split, surpassing the previous record of 1:31.74 set in 2000.
Nelson's 50 butterfly and 50 free ranked #14 and #42 in the NCAA DI this year, while three of the relay teams she competed with were all ranked in the Top 20 in the NCAA.
