Hawai‘i Swept by No. 5 Vanderbilt in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday to Vanderbilt University, the first being 12-1 and the second ending at 13-1.

The Rainbow Warriors (4-7) will drop their first series of the season after splitting with Washington State to start the year. The Commodores (9-2) extended their winning streak to eight in a row and have scored double-digit runs in all games of the series against UH.

UH will wrap up its series with Vanderbilt on Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. HT first pitch. The starting pitcher for UH is set to be Cade Halemanu, while the Commodores will throw Nick Maldonado.

Game 1

The day's first game was all Vanderbilt at the plate and on the mound. Highlighted by another home run from second baseman Tate Kolwyck in the top of the second, his second of the series, the Commodores tallied 19 hits over seven innings of work. For the eventual 12-1 final.

Starting pitcher Carter Holton showcased his arsenal and why he was a projected second-round pick in the MLB draft out of high school. Holton took perfection into the seventh inning, flirting with history as no pitcher has ever thrown a perfect game against UH in a seven or nine-inning game. The bid ended with the innings' first batter as senior left fielder Scotty Scott drew a walk, extending his on-base streak to 11-games but ending his 10-game hit streak.

In the next at-bat, graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera ended the no-hit bid by singling to right field. Three batters later, junior catcher Dallas Duarte singled to left field, scoring Scott for the 'Bows only run.

Graduate pitcher Andy Pitcher (0-2) was saddled with the loss as he went three and third innings, allowing seven earned runs while striking out five.

Game 2

In the second game of the day, senior pitcher Buddie Pindel recorded the best of his two outings, throwing three and third innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, and striking out one.

The offense helped Pindel's effort pushing a run across the dish in the bottom of the fourth off a single to center field by freshman first baseman Bronson Rivera, scoring junior designated hitter Stone Miyao tying the game at 1-1.

The sixth was when the game broke open, swinging back to the Commodores with an eight-run inning, capped off by a grand slam from left fielder Javier Vaz. Vanderbilt added to their lead with runs in eighth and ninth frames while collecting 18 hits.

Freshman pitcher Harry Gustin (0-1) picked up the first loss of his career, giving up two runs, one earned over an inning and two-thirds.
