HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (11-10, 5-1 Big West) held off CSUN, 3-1 to record its first conference sweep since 2019.
Maya Nakamura and
Dallas Millwood both blasted home runs to provide the offense needed for starting pitcher
Brianna Lopez to post her 11th complete game of the season.
Lopez improved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big West. She scattered five hits while allowing one run. She issued three walks with one strike out.
With two outs in the first,
Izabella Martinez laced a single up the middle.
Maya Nakamura followed by lifting her second homer of the series that drifted over the right-centerfield fence. It was the second time in the CSUN series that she hit a home run in the first inning. It marked her third homer of the season and seventh of her career.
In the second with one out, CSUN got back-to-back hard hits that carommed off the outfield fence but were held to just long singles by centerfielder
Brittnee Rossi and leftfielder
Mya'Liah Bethea respectively. UH then turned it's 10th double play of the year after a sharp grounder was hit to
Ka'ena Keliinoi who stepped on third and fired to
Dallas Millwood at first for the inning ending double play.
Millwood led off the bottom of the fifth with a line-shot home run to center to extend UH's lead to 3-0. It was her second round-tripper of the season and third in her Rainbow Wahine career.
CSUN's Jayme Steward led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to center. With a runner on first and no outs, UH turned yet another double play off a hard hit grounder that went from Keliinoi-to-Nakamura-to-Millwood for the first and second out. Later after a pitch got away from Martinez at catcher, she fired to Millwood at first catching the runner off base, she threw to Kaupe covering second for the inning ending pick off.
CSUN starter Alexis Martinez suffered the loss, dropping her record to 6-8. She thew five complete innings allowing all three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Reliever Kenedee Jamerson tossed the final frame and did not allow a hit or a run.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head to La Jolla, Calif. for a three-game series at UC San Diego. The series will start with a single game on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. HT followed by a Sunday doubleheader on April 2 beginning at 10:00 a.m. HT.
