LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow sailing team had an impressive showing with a second-place finish at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, held March 11-13, off the coast of Southern California. It was UH's highest finish ever in six all-time appearances in the prestigious event.
Competing in Catalina 37s, UH started fast on Friday, then capped a fantastic weekend with a strong finish on Sunday. Defending champion and host Cal Maritime took the weekend with a regatta-low 27 points as the Rainbows followed with 36. It was a historic run for UH in an event that has gained a reputation as one of the leading intercollegiate sailing invitationals in the nation since its inception in 2008.
A total of 10 races were completed over three days with 10 select schools from across the nation taking the waters. The Rainbows finished second in the first two races of the regatta, then took first in three more races – including the final two of the weekend -- to secure it highest finish since first competing in the Harbor Cup a dozen years ago.
UH was led by skipper
Owen Lahr and a crew that included
Sam Kimmel,
Kelsie Grant,
Hayden Lahr,
Samuel Patton,
Bastien Rasse,
Devon Stapleton,
Trey Summers. The 'Bows will return to action next weekend as they compete in the PCCSC South Regatta in Los Angeles, March 19-20.
