HONOLULU – The No. 3 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball had no trouble with Long Island, Wednesday to extend its win streak to five straight in the second of a three-match series at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-9. 25-13, 25-17.
The Rainbow Warriors (9-2) hit .538 for the match with 12 blocks and eight aces, extending their regular season home win streak to 13.
For the second straight night, outside hitter
Spyros Chakas led the team with 10 kills, hitting .588 in 17 errorless swings along with four digs and five blocks. Opposite
Dimitrios Mouchlias added nine kills, hitting .727 with four aces and three blocks. Middle blocker
Guilherme Voss matched his season-high with six blocks.
Kade Frischknecht and Hasan Hadzic each had six kills for the Sharks (3-9).
After struggling in the series opener, Mouchlias came out scorching hot in Set 1 with two kills and four aces, including three straight, during a seven-point scoring turn for an 11-4 lead. The Warriors piled it one with back-to-back double blocks by Chakas-Voss for an 18-8 lead. UH went on to hit .529 in the set with four aces and 5.5 blocks and limited LIU to -.095 hitting.
It was all UH to start Set 2 as the Warriors scored the first seven points with the help of two blocks and five LIU attack errors. The lead was 15-7 at the media timeout and 20-10 after an ace by Chakas. Freshman
Jack Walmer served out the set with five straight points.
The Sharks showed some fight in Set 3 taking a 6-5 lead. But the Warriors used a 5-1 run that included three blocks and Kāna'i Akana ace for a 16-11 lead.
The teams conclude their series on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
