HONOLULU, O'ahu – Saturday added to the season of history as the University of Hawai'i women's basketball dominated UC Riverside 76-57, and graduate forward
Amy Atwell broke the school three-point record.
With 8:39 on the clock and the Rainbow Wahine (10-8, 6-2) leading 58-42, Atwell hit a step-back three-pointer to surpass the 167-mark set by Megan Tinnin. The 'Bows stepped on the gas early against Riverside (6-9, 3-5) and never gave up their lead.
After giving up two buckets at the start, UH had everything dropping, going on a 9-0 run to take the lead, heading into the second quarter up 17-11. Another efficient quarter from the 'Bows already had Atwell in double figures and a widening gap now 39-20 going into the locker room at the half.
UH kept their foot on the gas in the second half, growing the margin to 24 in the third. Freshman forward
Nnenna Orji and Atwell combined for 16 in the final frame to close out the decisive victory.
It was a team effort from the 'Bows as four players eclipsed double-digits. Freshman guard
Olivia Davies continued her solid weekend, adding 11 points and a trio of assists. While freshman guard Deajah Phillips was in double-figures with 12 points for the ninth time this season. Orji came alive in the second half scoring eight of her eleven points in the fourth.
Rounding out the squad on her historic night, Atwell paced the 'Bows with 21 points and eight boards, notching her eighth game of 20 or more points this season.
Next week, UH is on the road against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 5:00 p.m. HT. Highlighting the road trip will be Saturday's marquee matchup against the top conference Long Beach State slated to start at 2:00 p.m. HT.
