Fourth Quarter Surge Propels Hawai‘i Past Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, CALIF. – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team squeezed out a 55-46 win at Cal State Fullerton Thursday night at Titan Gym.

The Rainbow Wahine (11-8, 7-2) picked up a crucial road win, moving to a recent stretch of 3-1 away from O'ahu, after starting the season 0-4. The Titans (8-13, 3-8) have dropped four in a row and will travel to UC Santa Barbara next after a nine-day break.

The 'Bows battled through an inefficient first half, shooting 6-of-34 from the field. Highlighted by 31 rebounds and nine free throws, helping keep the game within one point going into the locker room.

The shooting woes continued in the third quarter, but an and-one from graduate forward Amy Atwell and a pair of late free throws from freshman Olivia Davies tied the game 35-35, heading into the final frame. UH found their rhythm in the fourth and took a 38-37 lead, their first lead since late in the first. The 'Bows swung the momentum in their favor for an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to stretch the lead to 48-41. With 1:17 left, Atwell rattled off six straight to put the game on ice.

Atwell and Davies were the one-two-punch tonight as the South Perth, Australia native, posted 18 points, four blocks, and four steals. At the same time, Davies tied her career-high 17 points for the second time this season, adding five assists and three boards. As a team, UH pulled down a season-high 44 rebounds.

The 'Bows are back Saturday to face the No. 1 team in the conference, rival Long Beach State. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m. HT.
