Men’s Volleyball Clips Cardinal In First Point Challenge Finale

AUSTIN, Texas – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team rebounded from a first set loss to throttle No. 14 Stanford in four sets Saturday in the finale of the First Point Collegiate Challenge at standing-room only crowd at the Austin Convention Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-2) finished with a perfect 3-0 record in the two-day event, which marked the first collegiate men's volleyball matches in the state of Texas. A crowd of over 1,800 witnessed the tournament finale and saw high quality volleyball by both teams.

After dropping the first set, Hawai'i showed why they are the No. 1-ranked team in the country hitting a combined .377 with six aces and 12.5 blocks in the final three sets. As a team, the Warriors hit .283 for the match while limiting the Cardinal to .203.

The Greek connection of Dimitrios Mouchlias and Spyros Chakas led the way. Mouchlias finished with a match-high 18 kills, hitting .289 with four digs and five blocks. Chakas had a team-high three aces along with 13 kills and six digs. Brett Sheward and Kāna'i Akana each had 10 digs while Jakob Thelle posted 38 assists, six digs, four blocks and his nation-leading 28th service ace.

Will Rottman had a team-high 15 kills for the Cardinal (6-3), who dropped their seventh straight match to Hawai'i.

In Set 2, the Cardinal used a 6-1 run for a 9-6 lead and would not trail the rest of the way. The lead was 19-14 after Chakas hit into a double block. Each time the Warriors tried to inch back, the Cardinal's big block came through. Voss was stuffed giving Stanford a 21-16 lead and UH went on to hit .083 and did not record an ace.

UH bounced back in Set 2 in a big way, scoring the first seven points with Thelle at the service line. The lead was nine at 11-2 after the fifth Cardinal hitting error of the set. Hawai'i limited Stanford to .077 hitting and forced eight hitting errors. Mouchlias was 5-for-6 in the set including the set winner.

The Warriors scored the first three points of Set 3 and made it 7-1 forcing an early Cardinal timeout. Stanford pulled to within one after a 5-1 run but UH answered with four unanswered on Thelle's serve for 15-10 lead. An ace by Mouchlias made it 22-15 and Chakas' 12th kill ended it.

Reserve middle Cole Hogland had two blocks and a kill during a 5-1 run that put UH ahead 9-4 in Set 4. The Cardinal closed to within two but a 5-0 run with Chakas at the service line put UH up 17-10 and Stanford could not recover. Chakas' third ace of the match put the finishing touches on the win.

UH returns to Honolulu to host Long Island for a three-match series, Feb. 8-9, 11 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
