NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine return to the island of O'ahu after sweeping their final road trip of the regular season by taking down CSU Bakersfield, 75-61 on Thursday and Cal Poly, 73-49 on Saturday. UH enters the last two games on a three-game win streak and are 8-1 over their last nine games.
  • Road woes are a thing of the past for the 'Bows. After starting the season 0-4 away from SimpliFi Arena, UH is 6-1 with a five-game win streak.
  • Freshman guard Daejah Phillips has recently strung together one of the best stretches in the early part of her career. On February 24th, she scored a career-high 24 points against UC San Diego. A week later, on February 24th, she scored 19 against CSU Bakersfield, then 22 at Cal Poly.
  • UH is in control of their own destiny when it comes to winning the Big West Conference regular-season championship. The 2021-22 season is different from past years as the winner will be determined by win percentage. UH leads at 11-3 and .786 win percentage against conference foes, with UC Irvine sitting at 12-4 and .750 win percentage in second. If the 'Bows win both games, they'll win the title outright, lose or two, then things get interesting.
  • Earlier this season, UH picked up a win on the road at CSUN while falling short at UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos held the 'Bows to just 51 points, a season-low against conference opponents on January 27th, while shooting just 32% from the floor. Two days later, UH woke up and dropped 76 against the Matadors as Phillips and graduate forward Amy Atwell each scored 15 points in the victory.

GIVE ME THE KEYS… TO VICTORY
When you out-perform your opponent, naturally, that will lead to wins. When the 'Bows score 70 points or more, they're 10-1. Hold opponents to scores less than 60 points; UH is 8-0. 'Bows outshoot their opponents; they're 14-0. But halftime has also proven to be a fortune teller this season; when UH is up at the half, their record is 8-0, compared to 6-8 when trailing.

PREPARING TO TAKE OVER
The growth of Daejah Phillips has had its ups and downs, but lately, Phillips has seen more highs than the lows of a second-year player. Phillips is second on the team in scoring with 10.6 a game and is producing better overall numbers in almost every category than a year ago when she won the Big West Conference Sixth Man of the Year.

COULD THEY MAKE HISTORY?
Historically, the Rainbow Wahine find themselves in an exciting position with two games to go on the schedule, and UH is atop the Big West Conference standings. The 'Bows have won four regular-season conference championships, three in the Big West Conference (1992-93', 93-94', 2014-15') and one in the WAC (1997-98). The program has two tournament championships (1996 & 2016) in the Big West. Could the 2021-2022 campaign be the first year the 'Bows win both in the same season?

THIS ISN'T THE GREATEST PARAGRAPH. IT'S A TRIBUTE
UC Davis has been the team to beat in the Big West Conference as they've won six consecutive regular-season championships. But the 2021-22 campaign is wide open, and the 'Bows are currently at the top of the rankings. The last team to win a Big West regular-season championship not named UC Davis was UH during the 2014-2015 season. The year marked the third season under head coach Laura Beeman, and assistant coach Alex Delanian was also a part of her staff in his first season when the 'Bows went 14-2 against conference foes.

CLIMBING THE RANKINGS
Since joining the 1,000 point club on January 22nd, Atwell has been working her way up the all-time scoring chart at UH, currently sitting at 1,135 for No. 15 on the list. To make the top-10, she'll have to reach 1,200 points. Atwell is presently tied with Ashleigh Karaitiana at 1,167, with Kaui Wakita (1,173) and Kim Everett (1,174) up next on the list.

THERE'S ONLY ONE QUEEN
On February 5th, in front of her home crowd at SimpliFi Arena, Atwell drained a step-back three in the fourth quarter of a 76-57 win against UC Riverside, making her the all-time three-point queen in Rainbow Wahine basketball history. Atwell keeps adding to her all-time mark at 185 and counting.

 LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Atwell has attempted 490 three-pointers going into the weekend, putting her at No. 2 all-time. Atwell is currently on pace to eclipse 500 attempts for her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Megan Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .378, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes, attempts, and three-point shooting percentage at UH.

 SHE'S DOING WHAT NOW?!?!
Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years with her current pace. After 22 games, Atwell is averaging 18 points per game. Only two players have averaged 18 points or better as a senior in the women's basketball program history. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998.
