Hawai‘i Beats WSU 7-4 To Split Series

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i leaned on its bullpen for a 7-4 win over Washington State Monday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (2-2) fell behind on the series after the first two nights but played a variety of small ball to battle Sunday and Monday, ending the series in a split. The Cougars (2-2) will stay on the road for five consecutive games, a four-game series with Long Island in Peoria, Arizona, followed by a one-game getaway at Tarleton State.

The 'Bows used five pitchers on the night, as freshman Harry Gustin made his first career start. WSU struck in the second inning after Gustin walked a batter and hit another, bringing in a pitching change of sophomore Trevor Ichimura to face off against his former squad. Ichimura allowed a ground-rule double after he hit a batter, bringing in two runs to score, but sat the next three down in order to get out of the inning.

The bullpen shut down the Cougar offense from the third inning and on as the 'Bows stormed back, capitalizing on WSU miscues.

In the fourth inning, graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera scored on a passed ball after a Matt Wong strikeout. The aggressive base running and plate discipline continued for UH into the fifth as junior second baseman Matt Aribal and senior left fielder Scotty Scott scored on a swinging strikeout of Jacob Igawa, but with a wild pitch breaking seven feet from the plate. As a result, UH took the lead at 3-2.

The 'Bows added to the lead in the seventh as Scott scored his second run of the night and fifth of the series, following two errors on the same play by the second baseman. Junior first baseman Jacob Igawa answered the call with a sacrifice fly, sending Cabrera home for a 5-2 advantage.

UH added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning of work, both off bases-loaded walks.

Scott led the way in on-base production, reaching base in four out of five plate appearances. Scott accumulated a .625 average and .833 on-base percentage for the series. On the night, UH finished with seven walks and four batters hit by pitches, ending the series with 26 free passes and nine bruises.

Junior pitcher Dalton Renne picked up the first win of his career after throwing three and third innings, striking out three, and recording 10 consecutive outs in relief. Sophomore pitcher Connor Harrison recorded the first save of his career, throwing an inning and two-thirds, striking out two, and allowing two runs in the ninth.

The 'Bows will embark on their first road trip of the season later this week for the Tony Gwynn Classic in San Diego, California. UH will take on San Diego State once in the classic on Friday, followed by UNLV on Saturday Fresno State on Sunday, and will wrap up the trip with another game against San Diego State.
