Fast Start Leads Hawai‘i to 6-3 victory over WSU, and Hill's First Win

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i baseball team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium by a score of 6-3 over Washington State.

The Rainbow Warriors (1-2) notched the first career win at UH for head coach Rich Hill and marked the 1,080th win of his 35-year career. The Cougars (2-1) dropped their first game of the 2022 campaign and will look to Monday to claim their second series win since 2015.

UH started fast, scoring four runs in the first inning off starting pitcher McKabe Cottrell. The 'Bows loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by a pitch for sophomore catcher Nainoa Cardinez to do some damage. In return, the Kapa'a, Kaua'i native became the second batter of the inning to get hit by a pitch forcing in the first run of the game.

With the bases still loaded and UH in a 2-for-16 slump with runners in scoring position to start the season, sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori unloaded a two-run single through the left side of the infield, adding to the 'Bows lead. Freshman shortstop Jordan Donahue followed up with a single to center field, scoring Cardinez.

The Cougars answered with a run in the second and a run in the third, bringing the game within two at 4-2. Donahue added his second rbi of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Ujimori.

The 'Bows added to their lead in the seventh with a stroke of power from junior first baseman Jacob Igawa. After starting the series 0-11, Igawa sent a rocket over the opposite field wall for a solo shot, the first of long ball of the year for UH, bringing the score to a 6-2 advantage.

Junior pitcher Cameron Hagan started on the hill, pitching three innings while giving up two runs, one earned, and picking up one strikeout. Senior Buddie Pindel entered in relief and was nearly spotless over three and two-thirds of an innings work. The only hit he gave up was during his final encounter of the seven-inning and struck out five, picking up his first win of the season.

Ujimori led the offense by finishing the day three-for-three with two runs batted in and a walk. Joining Donahue with two hits was senior outfielder Scotty Scott, as he collected two singles and a walk.

UH, and WSU will wrap up the series on Monday, giving the 'Bows the chance to even up the series before heading to San Diego, California, for the Tony Gwynn Classic.
