NEWS & NOTES
- The Rainbow Wahine enter the game at 1-7 following a 76-66 loss at home to UNLV on Dec. 11th, extending their current losing streak to three games.
- All three recent losses came against conference championship teams from the 2021-2022 season, including Florida Gulf Coast, #2 Stanford, and previously mentioned UNLV.
- Redshirt sophomore guard Olivia Davies returned to action against the Runnin' Rebels after missing six straight games due to injury as she led the team with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
- Wednesday will mark the first road game for UH since Nov. 9th at Portland. The 'Bows wrapped up a six-game homestand where they went 1-5, with the lone win coming against Grambling State.
- The 1-7 record matches the worst start to a season under head coach Laura Beeman. Unfortunately, that stat also belongs to the 2018-19 squad, who wrapped up their non-conference slate at 3-7 after picking up wings against Idaho and HPU.
- UH and SJSU are no strangers to each other in the historical sense, as they both were members of the Big West and WAC, leading to UH holding the all-time mark in the series at 42-17. The matchup on Wednesday is the first time the two teams have squared off since 2016, when the Spartans knocked off the 'Bows 77-61 in 'O'ahu.
HERE'S WHERE WE QUOTE LORETTA DEVINE
A key component in the success of the 2021-22 Big West Championship team was the influence of assistant coach Khalilah Mitchell. Her ability to connect with players mentally while teaching them fundamentally is why she is now coaching at San Jose State. Mitchell coached at UH for four seasons alongside head coach Laura Beeman and assistant coach Alex Delanian. Many of the current players are still in contact with Mitchell, as well as Beeman, as the relationships she built in Hawai'i carry past the basketball court.
I LOOKED AT MY KINGDOM; I WAS FINALLY THERE
Transitions can be challenging, from a senior standout in high school to a freshman in college or moving from West Philadelphia to Bel-Air. But, on this season's veteran-heavy squad, all three freshmen have made a difference for the 'Bows. Avery Watkins has recorded four starts while averaging 10 minutes per game, in addition to Imani Perez picking up a start and alongside Jovi Lefotu averaging 16 minutes a game. The trio is playing significant minutes, with Lefotu leading the way with five points a game, compared to Perez, who is turning in a modest four points and three boards. Their lives may have got flipped-turned upside down, but there's no trouble in their neighborhood.
