Rainbow Warriors Go Red-Hot In North Shore Classic Opener

LAIE, Oahu -- The University of Hawaii men's basketball team opened up the inaugural Patty Mills North Shore Classic in impressive fashion with a commanding 74-61 win over Sacramento State Friday at the Cannon Activities Center.

UH improved to 4-1 with the win, giving the Rainbow Warriors its best start since 2018. It also propelled the team into the title game of the tournament where they will face Texas State which was a 78-65 winner over Southern Utah in the nightcap. The teams will meet for the championship at 7 p.m. 

For the second straight weekend in Laie, UH got off to a scorching start. The 'Bows scored nine of the game's first 11 points in a preview of what was to come. UH shot an incredible 74 percent  (20-of-27) in the first half to take a 44-30 lead into the locker room. 

UH didn't let up in the second half, building it's lead to  as many as 22 points. The 'Bows finished the game at 60 percent from the field for its best shooting performance since a 2017 win over Long Beach State (60.1%). The 'Bows also committed just seven turnovers for the game in defeating the Hornets (3-3) in the firt-ever meeting between the programs.

Noel Coleman led UH with 20 points and shot  4-of-7 on three-pointers for his second 20 point game of the year. Bernardo da Silva added a season-high 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added five rebounds and a block. UH also got nine points a piece from Samuta Avea and Harry Rouhliadeff.

UH will play in its second tournament title game in the first three weeks of the season. The 'Bows fell to Yale in the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Classic in an tight overtime battle on Nov. 14.
