Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rainbow Warriors Capture Inaugural Patty Mills North Shore Classic

LAIE, O'ahu -- The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team used a strong second half to claim the North Shore Classic title Saturday night with a 72-65 win over Texas State at the Cannon Activities Center.

Noel Coleman scored a game-high 21 points - 15 of which came in the second half - on 6-of-11 shooting and was named the tournament MVP after averaging 20.5 points per game in the two contests. With the win UH improved to 5-1 for the program's best start since the 2015-16 season.

Like its previous two games in Laie, UH came out of the gates strong. The 'Bows scored seven unanswered points and were doubling up Texas State, 22-11, with less than nine minutes in the half. But UH suddenly went cold and the Bobcats went on a 18-6 run to end the half to take a 29-28 edge into the locker room.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout much of the second half, but the Rainbow Warriors started to create some separation around the seven-minute mark. With UH up by one, Coleman scored four straight points to stretch the lead to 55-50 with 6:33 to play.

After a Texas State (4-3) bucket, Bernardo da Silva gave Hawai'i a seven-point lead with back-to-back buckets, the second of which was a dunk off of a feed from JoVon McClanahan as the shot clock expired, making it 59-52 with 5:06 left. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the way, with Samuta Avea hitting four straight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.

Da Silva joined Coleman on the all-tournament team after finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds to average 15.0 points per game and six rebounds over the weekend. He also turned in a big second half, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting after the break.

The Rainbow Warriors shot over 50 percent as a team for the third straight game at 51.1 percent on the night, while committing just nine turnovers including only three in the second half. The 'Bows shot 56.1 percent from the field over their three games in Laie, while shooting 41.2 percent from three-point range during that span.

The Rainbow Warriors now return to the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center with it first-ever meeting with Texas A&M Commerce on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
