Women’s Basketball Drops Home Opener To Florida Gulf Coast

HONOLULU, O'ahu– The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped its third consecutive game to start the 2022-23 campaign with a 65-45 home-opening setback to Florida Gulf Coast in the Bank of Hawaii Classic Friday afternoon at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-3,0-0) are currently mirroring the same record as a year ago to start the year, though that team answered by going 19-7 the rest of the way. The Eagles (3-0), ranked second nationally in the Mid-Major poll, are off to a fast start for their third consecutive victory, aiming for their third 30 win season in four years.

The Eagles jumped out on the Rainbow Wahine and never looked back in leading from wire-to-wire. FGCU raced out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and held a commanding 39-19 lead at the break. The Eagles a hit eight of their 12 three-pointers in the first half alone, while forcing UH into 12 turnovers and just 28 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

UH battled throughout but couldn't quite recover in the second half as FGCU built its lead to as many as 30 after the break. The 'Bows dominated the boards with a whopping 48-27 advantage, but were undone by 22 turnovers and 35 percent shooting, including just 3-of-14 on three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu led the 'Bows with nine points, on 3-of-9 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds. Graduate center Kallin Spiller led the team with 11 rebounds while Jacque David, who missed the first two games of the year, made her season debut with seven points in 12 minutes of action.

UH will have a short turnaround for their next contest as they'll take on Lipscomb in their second consecutive afternoon matinee at SimpliFi Arena with a 2:30 p.m. HT tipoff. The Bison dropped the opening game of the Bank of Hawaii Classic to San Diego, 49-45 on Friday.
