HONOLULU, O'ahu-- The University of Hawaiʻi women's basketball team took to the court Sunday afternoon in SimpliFi Arena for the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Classic against Lipscomb University, dropping an overtime battle 73-69.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-4) remain winless after four games, matching an unfortunate mark from the start of the 2018-19 season. The Bisons (3-3) bounced back after their opening-round loss to San Diego, picking up their third win in their last four games.
The 'Bows lead most of the game with a lead swelling to as much as nine points in the first quarter. However, after losing the lead late in the third quarter, the 'Bows had to claw their way back from an eight points deficit in the fourth. The 'Bows were able to finally tie the game back up with a lay-up by sophomore guard Daejah Phillips with three seconds left in the game, sending it into overtime. The Bisons built its lead to six, but UH answered by tying the game at 65-65, followed by an 8-4 run by the visiting team to end the game in extra time.
Sophomore Guard Lily Wahinekapu lead the way with 18 points across 37 minutes. Graduate center Kallin Spiller cleaned the glass for the 'Bows with a team-high 12 rebounds while adding seven points. Phillips also provided a notable performance with 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
UH fell behind throughout due to their inability to keep Lipscomb off the free-throw line as they went 12-of-19, compared to the 'Bows 6-of-9. The Bisons excelled in the painted area for 36 points, compared to the 'Bows' 22.
The 'Bows leaned on their production from the bench with 30 points led by sophomore forward Meilani McBee registering nine, and freshman guard Jovi Lefotu tallied seven points.
The Rainbow Wahine return to action this Friday, Nov. 25, at SimpliFi Arena, taking on Grambling State in the second game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Tip-off is at 2:30 P.M. HT.
