WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The Hawai'i women's soccer team saw its four-match unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday in a 2-0 loss to Long Beach State at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.
The two teams each finished the match with 13 shot attempts, but LBSU (4-4-4, 3-0-1 Big West) used a pair of first-half goals to provide the difference while Hawai'i (4-3-2, 1-1-2 Big West) put seven of its 13 shots on frame but couldn't capitalize.
Long Beach State struck first, as Cherrie Cox found the back of the net on a give-and-go with Sophie Jones in the 17th minute. The Beach added another goal in the 31st minute when Cox fired a cross to the front of the goal that was headed in by Lena Silano, making it 2-0.
Hawai'i had several opportunities to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, but couldn't capitalize.
Amber Gilbert had a couple of looks at goal in the first 20 minutes, putting shots on frame in the 13th and 19th minutes, but both attempts were saved by LBSU goalie Zora Standifer.
The 'Bows were unable to break through in the second half, as The Beach was able to fend off a couple of quality Rainbow Wahine looks at goal. Gilbert fired off another shot on goal in the 52nd minute before
Kelci Sumida put a header on frame off of a corner kick in the 82nd minute, but both were saved by Standifer.
Hawai'i's 13 shot attempts were its most in Big West play this year while the seven shots on goal were also the most by the 'Bows in conference play. A total of nine different Rainbow Wahine players attempted a shot, with Gilbert leading the way with three and Sumida and
Krista Peterson each firing off a pair of shots.
The Rainbow Wahine head back on the road for a two-match conference trip, starting Thursday at CSUN at 4 p.m. HT.
