Rainbow Wahine Draw with CSU Bakersfield

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i women's soccer team played CSU Bakersfield to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex to open a three-match homestand.

Hawai'i dominated possession, out-shooting the Roadrunners 21-5 and attempting 12 corner kicks to CSUB's six. The 21 shot attempts matched a season-high for the Rainbow Wahine while their eight shots on goal also tied a season-high.

The Rainbow Wahine struck first, scoring off of a corner kick for the first time this year to take the lead in the 26th minute. Krista Peterson delivered a beautiful ball from the corner to right in front of the net where Kelci Sumida converted on a header for her second goal of the season.

The Roadrunners would equalize in the 42nd minute with a goal of their own off of a corner kick, as Anela Nigito scored on a feed from Kaylee Covert.

Hawai'i had numerous chances again in the second half, but was unable to come up with a game-winner. The Rainbow Wahine attempted 13 shots after halftime and had six corner kicks while limiting the Roadrunners to just three shot attempts in the second half.

UH had good chances in the 69th and 70th minutes, as Sumida made another run at goal and got a shot off to draw a corner kick that resulted in a Mia Foster header and shot. Sumida had another quality look on a set-piece in the 78th minute, putting a header on frame on a Peterson corner kick that was saved by a CSUB defender.

Sumida's goal was the 13th of her career, putting her just two goals away from cracking the UH career top 10. The goal also gave her 32 career points, just four shy of moving into a tie for 10th all-time in Rainbow Wahine history. Peterson's assist on the corner kick gave her three on the season and added to her team-leading point total of 13.

The Rainbow Wahine will play their final two regular season home matches this week, hosting UC Riverside on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 4 p.m. Both matches will also be on Spectrum Sports.
