HONOLULU – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team needed four sets to put away No. 7 Loyola Chicago Friday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 25-14.
The Rainbow Warriors (2-0) dominated at the service line and at the net in the season-opening sweep of the Ramblers with a combined 14 aces and 18.5 blocks in the two matches. UH extended its regular season win streak over non-Big West or non-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams to 48 matches.
Outside hitter
Chaz Galloway finished with a team-high 12 kills along with two aces, four digs, and two blocks. Opposite
Dimitrios Mouchlias added a career-high 11 kills, six digs, and four blocks. Setter
Jakob Thelle served three aces along with 39 assists and one block. In the seven sets against the Ramblers, Thelle had nine aces.
A total of 15 players saw action for the Warriors, including Stanford transfer
Kyler Presho, son of former UH great Mark Presho, who started the match at middle blocker and Grand Canyon transfer
Avery Enriques.
Parker Van Buren had a match-high 14 kills to lead the Ramblers (0-2).
In Set 1, Presho's first career kill gave UH a 9-4 lead.
Filip Humler's first ace extended the lead to seven at 19-12 and the Rambers got no closer than five the rest of the way. Despite being out-hit (.409 to .360) and out-blocked (4 to 0), Warriors went on to take the set in part because of Loyola's six service errors.
The Warriors scored the first seven points of Set 2 behind two aces by Thelle. Back-to-back kills by Mouchlias gave UH a 15-6 advantage at the media timeout. UH hit .500 in the set compared to .154 for the Ramblers.
LUC jumped out to an early lead in Set 3 and led throughout. The Warriors closed to within one at 15-14 following a Mouchlias kill but the Ramblers answered with four straight and pulled away.
In Set 4, the Warriors led 4-1 after Galloway's second ace of the match. Sypros Chakas energized the team off the bench and his solo block gave UH a 7-2 advantage. Chakas' ace made it 13-4 and the lead hit double digits at 15-5 after a Voss-Thelle double block. UH finished with three aces and 4.5 blocks in the dominant win.
The Warriors will next host first-year program Edward Waters, Jan. 14 & 16 at SimpliFi Arena.
