NEWS & NOTES
- Originally, the Rainbow Wahine's conference schedule was set to start on the road with visits to UC Riverside (December 30th) and UC Davis (January 1st), but both teams had struggles with the COVID-19 around the holidays, canceling both contests.
- The 'Bows ended their non-conference schedule on December 21st with a loss on the road at UNLV, 70-63. Graduate forward Amy Atwell scored a game-high 24 points, hitting seven three-pointers in the effort.
- Atwell continues to be on the best stretch of her career, scoring 155 points over her last seven games, bringing her season average up to 18 points per game. In nine games this season, she has eclipsed 20 or more points. In comparison to past leading scorers, she is in good company. During the 2017-18 season, Sarah Toeaina averaged 16.4 points per game to lead the 'Bows while accounting for 11 games of 20 or more points. In 2019-20 Julissa Tago averaged 15 points per game, and recorded seven games of 20 or more points.
- UH has not fared well of late in Big West Conference openers, dropping five in a row heading into 2022. The last time the 'Bows began their conference slate with a victory was in 2016, and they later went on to win the tournament championship, earning a bid into the NCAA tournament.
- The saying goes, "it's not how you start, but how you finish." While true, the opposite can be said for UH this season. When trailing or tied at the half, UH is 1-6 on the year, but when they're leading, they're 2-0.
- COVID-19 has affected every college basketball team in multiple ways. A big one has been attendance. But sticking to traditions and support, even with all the restrictions and headaches, UH still ranks #1 in the Big West this season in attendance.
- The 'Bows have played well against the Titans over the years, accumulating an overall record of 27-18 all-time, including wins in four of the last five games played. The 'Bows have won 10 in a row against the Titans at home, and the last recorded loss on O'ahu was back in 1995. But the most notable piece of information in the all-time series is UH has not lost a home game to Cal State Fullerton since rejoining the Big West in 2012.
PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Atwell continues to be the team's top shooting threat at 18.9 points per game. She most recently moved the No. 2 spot of the all-time three-pointers made list surpassing Ashleigh Karaitiana, currently sitting at 153 and is pacing towards the top spot. Megan Tinnin, the all-time leader in made threes, sits at 167. Atwell will need to average one three-pointer a game over the remaining 17 scheduled for the year to break the record. This season, she is also the only student-athlete on the roster who has a chance at 1,000 career points, with 906. To reach the milestone, she needs to average four points per game for the rest of the season.
LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Anyone watching Atwell over her career knows she loves to shoot the three, leading to her pursuit of the made three-pointers record at UH. Going into Saturday's game, she has attempted 409 three-pointers, putting her at No. 4 overall with former teammate
Julissa Tago at No. 3 with 444, followed by Ashleigh Karaitiana at No. 2 with 448. At Atwell's current pace of 7.5 attempts per game, she will eclipse 500 attempts during her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .374, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes attempts and shooting percentage at UH.
